I find myself coming to this page hoping to see good news every couple of days
Nothing ever happens though.

I hope it doesn't get cancelled like what happened to the Nissan IDX.
-
My uninformed guess is that it will be produced but in Japan only.

I find myself coming to this page hoping to see good news every couple of days also

I also come here all the time.
I'm hoping there's a production model unveiling at the 2016 Tokyo motor show. I think if no news comes up by then it's unlikely to be built. The media should at least be asking questions to Toyota execs by then.
I don't think anything can be read in to the lack of news recently, companies often silently work on production.
I doubt it would be a Japan only model, it's not a Kei car, you never know though.
The 370z and 86 will need replacements in the next few years, even if the s-fr doesn't eventuate, Nissan have repeatedly stated they're looking at a smaller cheaper model for next Z-car, so I think we might get something s-fr like one way or another.

I'm hoping that SFR will be built a lot easier since some R&D will be taken from other platforms (FRS and Daihatsu Kei Cars).

There was only so long I could wait. Now the proud owner of a MX-5!
