View Full Version : Too cute or uniquely sporty?

Let's talk looks... This thing is real bubbly and cute but with its FR layout it's also targeted at enthusiasts and ppl that actually like to drive. Those ppl tend to like more 'aggressive' looking cars so is this thing too cute for its likely demographic?

I'd say this is true for the most part, but then there's this...

Cute cars can definitely win the hearts of enthusiasts. ;)

You can always make it 'aggressive'

Example. Suzuki Cappuccino

But I do see your point that it's 'cute' for sure. I still like it none the less

Hasn't stopped these cute cars from selling well to people that like to drive (together) either. :)

This design reminds me a lot of the original NA Miata design. Little cartoonish but so simple and fun.

Well, if the production car follows the same trend as the FRS, then it will look fairly different from the concept. Toyota is known for having weird looking concepts with far better looking production models...

I'd say it's too cute in current form. Just change the headlights to something more similar to the FRS and it would look like dynamite.

I love the design and actually hope it doesn't change much from concept to production. Most new cars are so overstyled it's refreshing to see something simple that doesn't have creases and folds and body kits everywhere.

My only issue with the design is the grill. Way too big and low, giving it a blowfish look. Close it up and it will look good IMO. I like the simple design of it just needs to be less cartoonish.

I like it as is...

And a Cappuccino I always have liked:

IMO it's a really good looking car. Lots of character and just enough retro. It's a more well conceived design than the MX-5 which has bad curves everywhere and that horrible rear end. Looking forward to the production version of this.

From what I have read the target demographic is the sub 86 entry level crowd. I don't know how much it will be marketed to the performance guys so aggressive looks may not be the best anyway. Many cars have proven that "cute" sells to the average buyer so it may not change much. The level of completion in the pics seems to be well beyond the average concept or prototype which would also indicate that this is the production version already.

I love the way it looks from the side, but I'm not sold on the front or the back. Although, I like the idea of it as a track car so I think it's a perfect mix of sporty and cute. Just imagine making it crazy fast and just passing everyone on a track with this cute, angry little car. I love it.

I think it hits the mark RIGHT on the head. as I said before, it looks like it's got something to prove and that gives it a unique character

I mean "cute" is fine if it's also suitable for guys to drive. Will it be a chick car is another story (like the Miata is often said to be)....

Give it a year and there'll be a ton of aftermarket front bumpers to butch it up for those that think it's too cute. Same with turbo/supercharger kits for the "moar powa" crowd

dude, I couldn't care less about what's "suitable" or what others perceive about me and my car. as long as I'm having fun.

Like find any miata, beetle, MR-S, or Mini forum and you'll find plenty of people who think the same way.

I should also point out. You're buying your car for you, not them, so why not have fun?

Although, honestly, I think many people buy their cars for other people. Which is sad.

I must confess that as much as I do buy a car for me there is a certain level of validation I hope to receive from others. Not one person should be able to honestly say that at least deep down inside they want everybody else to like their car. It is just plain and simple human nature at work.

Now, you're a psychology professor now? lol jk

I do agree with both statement. It's a human nature to worry somewhat about what someone else thinks.

Overall as long as my my wallet let me buy one, I can make it meaner looking ;)

Nope not a professor but a large part of my job depends on understanding human nature, what drives a or motivates people and trying to prevent them from doing stupid things.

True, and I do like when people validate my decisions. My point was more to not caring if someone doesn't approve.

Now that I've had more time to get used to the look and see it in other colors I still think the design is cute but the styling is appropriate for its specs and its goal of just being fun. At least it's different than all the copy-cat designs out there now.

Since first seeing you post this on ft86 forum...my mind has been warped - I can't unsee it and the actual front looks wrong for the car! The fog lights being where they are is what truly makes it work...Stroke of genius! Out miata'd a miata! LOL

If the S-FR looked like that I would look back at it when parking every time just like the FR-S, but it would be more of a looking back and making baby faces and saying "don't worry little one, daddy is going into to work right now but will be back as soon as possible to get you... just wait for daddy's lunch break...okay?" LOL

And I'll post again the image that immediately popped into my head when I first saw that:

The full circular headlight render looks much better. I'm fine with the exterior being all cute with huge eyes and a gaping mouth, but that interior to me is a bit odd to me. I'm not sure I like the HVAC controls in a line, and I'm not sure what that lime green thing on the steering wheel is.

I'm ok with the angry eyes because they're big and round enough to be approchable, it's the downturned grill I don't like, Toyota hasn't had a good grill in decades though so I don't have my hopes up on that front.

Interior is extremely concept car, my money is all the flash will go away and it will look like every other econo-box Toyota/Scion interior with parts bin switches and knobs and a generic mostly neutral accent palette, probably going to be FR-S/Camry/RAV4 three knob HVAC controls mounted vertically instead of whatever is being shown now.

Hope the dashboard stays, that looks good with modern digital readouts (aww yeah get ready for our version of mullet jokes like the 80's GM guys in 15+ years) and all the appropriate gauges. Steering wheel looks almost identical to the 86's with the exception of that terrible little touchscreen thingy, doubt that will stay as it is, my hands are all over that area in my car.

I am afraid that at the price point being knocked around the readouts will probably be the first thing to go. Could be wrong though as the new Darts are a low cost car with a very comprehensive digital gauge package.

There is that (although half the parts probably come from there) but they also have higher labour costs.

That's true. It's kinda funny to think that, it's cheap to ship it back and forth than building it at the one place.

This is the first new and affordable car that I've been excited about and actually considered buying.

Hello from Norway, and a warm welcome to the forum :-)

Yeah, everybody here seems to like the car. (After all, we all signed up for the S-FR forum...)

It's the affordable part that makes me believe in this car.
There must be a lot of people out there looking for something cheap but reliable and with a warranty, but also fun to drive.
This could be it!

We should start a local club for the SFR.

Also, I'll tell you what I feel about the design of this car.

A few months ago, I thought about buying a car from the 60's or 70's. I like the design of that era. Then I thought that I wish car companies would release cars that are modern copies of cars from that era. Something that looks like a 1960's sports car, but has a lot of modern equipment.

We have that here, and to me, that is a good thing.

These three cars have unique design points that are visible influences in the design of the SFR to me. Making it a genuine Toyota product as far as I am concerned.

as I've stated before, I like this car because it's not intmidating at all.

unlike the people who buy Camaros and Challengers and claim big power. I want a car that's light, balanced, and fun. and as a plus can glide across the snow when it gets particularly heavy :p

As for looks this is funky enough to have character but not turn any heads. basically, it's just right
